Jodie Turner-Smith is opening up about how she talks to her daughter about a challenging topic.
The actress, 39, appeared on a new episode of Hoda Kotb's Joy 101podcast, where she spoke to the TV personality, 61, about how she navigates discussing her and Joshua Jackson's divorce with their 6-year-old daughter Juno.
"I'm a child of divorce myself, and so is my ex-husband. So it's like it's always been important to think about, 'Okay, what is the language around which we are going to talk about this with our daughter?' Because it is her new reality," Turner-Smith explained.
"We're learning as well and not always getting it totally right — but the idea is always two homes filled with love," she continued. "And I'm like, 'You got two houses, girl.'"

The Queen & Slim star said navigating the conversations can be "difficult," as she wants to find a balance between "being age appropriate and child-centered in the way that you talk about it."
Still, she said "keeping it real" is also important so that Juno "has an understanding of what this means."

The actress, who finalized her divorce from Jackson in May 2025, said one of her "favorite tools" to use in these conversations is books.

"I read her so many books about divorce, about what that means. About what that new world is, about what is supposed to be happening, what’s not supposed to be happening,” she shared. “Children’s books have been helpful as well.”
Turner-Smith's comments come two months after PEOPLE confirmed that the former couple was using a private judge to finalize their custody arrangements, almost a year after finalizing their divorce.

Reps for Jackson and Turner-Smith did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment at the time.
When Jackson and Turner-Smith finalized their divorce in May 2025, the two agreed that Jackson would pay $2,787 in monthly child support. They also agreed to joint custody of their daughter. However, just one month later, in June, Jackson filed an emergency motion alleging that his ex-wife had changed their daughter Juno's school without his permission.

In October, the two called off their divorce trial, according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE. The documents showed that Turner-Smith was working with Jackson outside of the courtroom to find a custody deal for their daughter.
After four years of marriage, Turner-Smith filed for divorce in October 2023.
