King Charles and Queen Camilla exchanged gifts with President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump during their state visit to the U.S., where the King's gift for the American president came with a compelling message.

On April 28, the King, 77, and Queen, 78, participated in an official gift exchange with the Trumps during their state visit to the U.S.

Gift exchanges are a traditional element of state visits and a statement from Buckingham Palace revealed the poignant present the King gave President Trump, 79.

Buckingham Palace shared on April 28 that the sovereign gave Trump a framed facsimile — a premium copy — of the 1879 design plans for the Resolute Desk, which has a British royal connection.

The Resolute Desk was a gift from Queen Victoria to President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1880 and has been used by almost every American president since, becoming a symbol synonymous with the office of the presidency.

The original design plans for the Resolute Desk are kept by the National Maritime Museum in London, illustrating the vision for the President's Desk. The Resolute Desk was made from the timbers of the British exploration ship the H.M.S. Resolute, which was abandoned in 1854 and recovered by American whalers, the White House Historical Association said.

It was refitted in America and sent to Queen Victoria in 1856 as a gesture of goodwill and friendship between the nations, and the H.M.S. served in the Royal Navy until 1879.

After the ship was decommissioned, some of the ship's timber was then transformed into three desks by a master carpenter, with one presented to President Hayes by Queen Victoria, King Charles' great-great-great grandmother.

The Resolute Desk rests in the Oval Office and the King's gift for Trump reflected the bond that binds the United Kingdom and the United States, one of Britain's most famous former colonies.

King Charles and Queen Camilla are spending four days in the U.S. this week for a state visit commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, visiting at the invitation of President Trump and on the advice of the British government.

Elsewhere in the gift exchange, Queen Camilla presented Melania, 56, with a Fiona Rae brooch. The Queen gave the first lady jewelry from a King's Trust loan recipient, who is now one of Britain's few enamel specialists and today holds a Royal Warrant from the King.

Trump gave King Charles a bespoke facsimile of a letter from John Adams to John Jay in 1785. In it, Adams recapped what it was like for King George III to receive him as the first U.S. ambassador to Great Britain. It was a loaded meeting between the monarch and a former subject, who were "once bitter enemies" but met up as "statesmen," with King George affirming he was ready to accept U.S. friendship, the Buckingham Palace statement said.

Melania gifted Queen Camilla with six Tiffany’s English King Sterling Silver Teaspoons and White House Honey, the cutlery being the jeweler's interpretation of the "King" designs popular in England and the U.S. at the end of the 19th century.

The spoons are engraved with the Queen's cypher and the honey pays homage to her interest in beekeeping, plus a shared appreciation for sustainability, craftsmanship, and the natural world.

King Charles and Queen Camilla's U.S. visit is the first of his royal reign and the couple touched down near Washington, D.C. on Monday, April 27.

They were feted with a military ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House on Tuesday, April 28, the highest diplomatic honor extended by the U.S. to a visiting Head of State, and the festivities continue tonight with a state dinner at the White House hosted by the Trumps.
