A new report suggests Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had been privately planning their return to the UK for several years, but only made the final decision recently before informing King Charles. The couple reportedly waited until they had secured approval for their children to attend a particular school before making their plans official.

According to a report by The Times, Prince Harry and Markle “had been privately discussing returning to the U.K. for a couple of years.” However, they finalized their decision before telling King Charles, whom they reportedly informed on August 16. The official news of them moving back to the UK was made public three days later, on August 19.
A source close to the Sussexes reveals that they held back their decision for one key factor: their children’s acceptance at a certain school. “They had to wait to be told whether or not their children had got in—just like many other people waiting in mid-August. They weren’t able to confirm their plans until very late in the day, because the school—rightly—works to their own timetable. There was no special treatment.”
At the time of writing, the name of the school Archie and Lilibet are expected to attend remains publicly undisclosed. The same outlet previously reported that the Sussexes will not receive taxpayer-funded security following their return to the UK.

Andy Burnham described security matters as private before congratulating Harry and Meghan on their relocation. “We wish them well in the move that they’re making,” he said. The couple will not be returning to their royal responsibilities and are expected to remain private individuals while living in private accommodation outside London.
Their decision to relocate to the UK also comes more than a month after the Sussexes’ private reunion with King Charles at Highgrove House in Gloucestershire.
