Willie Nelson is turning 93

The music legend was officially born April 29, 1933 — though his birth date is rooted in a bit of small-town paperwork confusion

Nelson has previously explained that his Texas birth was actually recorded one day late, on April 30

Willie Nelson is turning 93, and he'll have two days to celebrate.

The country legend and 15-time Grammy winner, officially born on April 29, 1933, has long embraced a unique birthday tradition rooted in a bit of small-town paperwork confusion. As Nelson once explained on his SiriusXM radio show, his birth in Abbott, Texas, was recorded a day late.

“I was born before midnight on the 29th, but it didn't get registered in the county courthouse until the next day, the 30th,” Nelson said at the time. “So it went out officially as the 30th. I just do both days.”

That means every year, fans can toast Nelson on both April 29 and April 30 — a fitting double celebration for a man whose career has spanned decades.

In the late 1950s, Nelson worked as a songwriter while DJing at radio stations in Texas and the Pacific Northwest. He later moved to Nashville to pursue a music career, releasing his first of 105 studio albums in 1962.

Even into his 90s, Nelson shows little sign of slowing down, and the “On the Road Again” singer continues to tour regularly.

Beyond touring, Nelson has continued to stay creatively and politically active. He founded the annual Farm Aid music festival in 1985 to support family-owned farms, and he has campaigned for numerous Democratic presidential candidates.

In December, Nelson spoke about how he takes care of himself, telling The New Yorker he regularly does sit-ups, arm rolls, leg lifts and jogs in place to keep his physical health in order. “I’m in pretty good shape, physically, for ninety-two,” he said. “Woke up again this morning, so that’s good.”

In that same interview, Nelson's wife Annie D'Angelo, 69, joked that he’s “Benjamin Buttoning” her.

“He just keeps going and going,” Annie said.
